Your “super-sized” portion

Step outside or look out your window.  Look up.  What do you see?  Big, isn’t it?

I mean how do you describe sky?  It fills as far as you can see, but if you travel 5 or 1,000 miles there is still MORE.

How do you describe sky?

What about this amazing planet that is wrapped by the un-ending sky?

There is majestic beauty …

and there is minute beauty …

Dune grass on St. John’s Island taken by my sister-in-law

and intricate beauty of a snow-frosted morning …

Copper Mountain Colorado – riding up the ski lift after fresh snow 2002

and fleeting beauty …

Herron flight taken by my sister-in-law, St. John’s Island, Oct 2012

and beauty that speaks of steadfastness … like sunrises

and sunsets

So where am I going with all of this?  I was walking early one morning this past week and was listening to/worshipping with the song “Healer” by Trent Cory.  There is a line that says “I believe that You’re my portion”.  I’ve sung that line many times.  I’ve believed it. But suddenly, I was overcome by it.

You, My Heavenly Father, – the Creator of all (Gen 1:1) are my portion, my inheritance, my share, my possession, my award (Ps 73:26).  There is no limit to my portion.  What consumes and rocks my heart even more is because I am a joint heir with Christ (Rom 8:17 ) who is God’s first-born son, my portion is actually a double portion (Deut 21:15-17).  Double infinity.  My heart cannot contain this much promise and unconditional hope, and so it spills out out onto this page and into the lives around me with even more to follow.  My portion and your portion are as vast and beautiful as everything I’ve tried to describe here and so much more than I can describe.

The proverbial “icing on the cake” – it’s unconditional.  My portion/your portion, is not defined by, or for that matter consumed by, circumstances.  It depends solely on God’s infiniteness which never changes (Heb 13:8) and at the same time is new every morning (Lam 3:23).

Forgive me for being pretty basic here … but my portion, your portion … is not like pie when the more people that take a slice, the smaller your portion becomes.  Our Heavenly Father is INFINITE (Heb 7:24-25).  There is always MORE to infinite; it cannot be diminished, that is the defining characteristic of infinite.  Take a look at the definition of infinite:

  • immeasurably great
  • indefinitely or exceedingly great
  • unlimited or unmeasurable in extent of space, duration of time, etc.
  • unbounded or limitless

But, I gotta tell ya (that’s my best southernese coming out) many days my perspective gets messed up and I go into pie-mode. I am asking for “enough” to get through the day with whatever challenges it holds, both known and unknown.  You know what I’m talking about … be it your own heartache or an aching heart because of pain in the lives of those you love, chronic illness or pain, a weary body, the demands of just being a grown-up and having a job to name a few.

Prayers that in essence are: Just give me a “sliver” to get me through God, without taking away from what anyone else needs.  Sound familiar? A tad bit different from the reality of the super-sized, double-portion of infinite supply (Phil 4:19) that is yours and mine every day.

My choice is to exchange my “sliver” for “super-sized”.  How about you?

    1. Thank you Kate. You’re encouragement means a great deal to me! I too think the Herron picture is amazing. My sister-in-law sees the world in a beautiful way and her pictures capture her perspective.
